Deadline for Application (EXTENDED)

INTRODUCTION

Makassar Strait is the main channel of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) that connects the waters from the Pacific Ocean to Indian Ocean. As part of the global ocean thermohaline circulation, Makassar Strait is very important to the global climate system. The Makassar Strait throughflow is influenced by numerous air-sea interaction processes over time scales ranging from intraseasonal to seasonal monsoonal forcing to interannual influence from the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Coastal processes such as riverine input and tide-topography interactions can also affect vertical mixing and alter the characteristics of Pacific Ocean water as it transits through Makassar Strait. For oceanographic study, a variety of observational and numerical modeling tools are available to address this wide range of processes and scales.

Time and Place

This workshop will beheld 27th November to 1st December 2017. The workshop will be located at Computational Physic Laboratory, Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Mulawarman University, Samarinda, East Borneo, Indonesia.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this workshop is to increase our awareness about the importance of Makassar Strait as the main conduit for the ITF and to better understand the mechanisms and processes that control the variability of flow within the passage. Specifically the aim of the workshop is to improve the skill set and knowledge of young researchers and lecturers concerning the general physical oceanography of the Indonesian Seas, and especially the role of Makassar Strait.

Better understanding of the flow and water mass transformation within the Indonesian Seas and specifically within Makassar Strait

Improving the knowledge capacity and participation of students and early career scientists to enhance oceanographic knowledge about the Indonesian seas in terms of both science and technology

Assessing the potential to develop a collaborative network of oceanographic study includinglocal industries, state agencies and educational institutions surrounding Makassar Strait
